Birdseye View...a fanatics thoughts from this weekend.
Okay. This is a running blog. I know. Odds are, that's why 99.99% of you visit my little neck of the woods. But in case you didn't get it from the name...I am the Running Jayhawk. And right now...this very moment...I want to stress the Jayhawk part, even though I ran a suprisingly amazing race this morning.
Being a Jayhawk fan, you kind of go through the run of the gamut with emotions. You have seasons full of a lot of highs where you destroy top-ranked teams on the hardwood...and seasons of heartbreak where you're gone in the first round of the big dance to some mid-major team where you don't even know where they're located (although I will admit, up until a few years ago I had no idea that Bucknell was in Lewisburg, PA).
Unless you're living under a rock or hate college hoops, I'm sure you've all read the press about Roy Williams leaving KU for UNC and all of the dizzying ties between the two schools. Yah. You get it. But I promise you, you don't get it, unless you lived it like I did. In a way, it's kind of like running. You've got friends that "get" your obsession of running mile after mile and working your tail off to shave those extra 10 seconds off your pace, but they don't truly get it.
Back in 2000 when I was a freshman/sophomore in college, I listened to Roy tell Jayhawk Nation that he was here to stay. He said things like "I'll die a Jayhawk" and "I'm staying!" and pretty much solidified his long-term future with Kansas.
Then in 2003, my senior year...after losing the championship game to Syracuse (I still feel the sting of this one), Roy was asked about the open UNC position after Doherty had been fired...to which he promptly responded: "I could give a [BLEEP] about North Carolina right now."
Another three cheers for Roy.
But a few short weeks later...that bleep changed. One press conference and a high-speed chase to the airport later...the Roy Williams era ended.
Abruptly.
Without warning.
And it hurt.
He left us...for that other school out east. His alma mater. North Carolina.
It was the kind of hurt you feel after you break up with that first real love in your life. Your insides feel hollowed out and you go through the motions aimlessly. There may have even been a few moments of hopelessness...who could ever fill the shoes of Roy Williams?
Bill Self. That's who.
Now, I know you're sitting there thinking, "C'mon Barb...this is only basketball."
Oh...to you, this may be the case. But to you, me and my fellow Jayhawks say you just don't get it.
When Bill Self came, I'll admit, many of us were a bit...uneasy...at first. He performed well in conference play. Coached the team to impressive victories in hostile arenas on the road. But within three years, we had two first round losses. Some of us scratched our heads wondering if KU had made the right decision. This wasn't the Kansas legacy we held with such high honors.
But soon enough, Self found himself in a soft spot in our hearts. We grew to adore him. His mannerisms, endearing. His tenacity, infectious. His smile, like your favorite uncle. We even came to terms with the losses to Bucknell and Bradley, although if we never have to face another B-named School in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, I'll be one happy Jayhawk.
So when the brackets came out several weeks ago, I admit, I was secretly hoping we would have the opportunity to meet Roy Williams and his Tar Heels in the Final Four. I knew it'd be a long, challenging road for both teams...but I had a very good feeling about it all.
I went into Saturday's game comparing the situation to that of the 1980 U.S. Hockey team. The semi-final round, they were the underdogs facing the Soviet Union. The U.S. team, the purveyor of all things good and right. The Soviets...well...you know how the story goes.
And so...we, the Kansas Jayhawks, were the underdogs against the Big Bad Tarheels. And like the 1980 Hockey Team...we prevailed.
The semi-final game against North Carolina may as well had been the Championship game in my mind. It was incredible. Sweet victory! An embarassing 28-point lead...and we let Roy and his boys come back to be within four points, like taunting the carrot in front of the rabbit, before pulling away one final time to solidify that we are indeed the better team. The better program. The better coach.
It was a beautiful moment. And I may or may not have shed a tear or two in overwhelming pride.
Monday night, I'd love to have a Kansas victory against Memphis. I would be tickled pink if we can mark the 20th anniversary of Danny Manning and the Miracles' tournament win with another championship banner.
But if the cards don't add up, I'm okay with that.
Because no matter how intense the championship game may or may not be, to many Jayhawk fans it will pale in comparison to the KU/UNC match up. That was the game the fans had been craving for years. And that was essentially the championship game in my mind.
Granted, that sentiment is likely a completely different mindset for the current students, players and older alumni.
And I think if you were to ask any Jayhawk that witnessed Roy proclaim his eternal loyalty to Kansas...and then hop on a jet plane for North Carolina three short years later...I think many of us would agree...
We would rather have the opportunity to destroy Roy Williams and the Tarheels on the hardwood than take home a national championship.
Bold. I know.
But that's something you just don't get. And that's okay.
You didn't live it.
I did.
Now that that is settled. It's time to wrangle some Tigers and claim another national title.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk. Go KU.

I'm from PA, didn't even go to Kansas (almost, but for financial reasons stayed in PA), but I am obsessed with the Jayhawks!!... and with running!
And while I should be living in Pittsburgh, cheering for the Pitt Panthers, I sport crimson and blue around campus and secretly am ashamed that I have a degree from Pitt instead of KU.
I don't even know how I happened to stumble across your blog, but I love it! Two of my favorite things in the world are mixed into one blog! Thanks for the best blog ever.
Go KU!
i agree. even if, God forbid, we lose tonight, at least we can say we beat Roy!
Amen, sister. My three little boys want to go to Lawrence to watch the game in the fieldhouse tonight so bad. Too bad for them bedtime is at 8:00, and there's no freakin' way I'm taking a 7, 5 or 3-year old anywhere near Lawrence tonight. A family room in Overland Park is just going to have to do this time around.
Comparing a matchup of two number one seeds to the US/USSR hockey game is a little over the top, wouldn't you say? UNC was favored by what? 3 points?
Also, I find the Jayhawks hatred of Williams WAY over the top. Give me a break. The new guy you all love so much, bailed on all us Illinois fans just like Williams did to you. Maybe now you all can FINALLY get over it.
Then again, maybe we Illinois fans would have been a little more upset with Self if he hadn't had such a nasty habit of choking in the tournament.
We may still be SLIGHTLY bitter, but it could never approach what the Jayhawk fans have been pouring on Roy from the start.
A man has the right to do what's best for him and his family. Have you ever quit a job? Have you ever bailed on anything you said you would do?
Hey Anonymous 1 - I'm a Pitt alum and love my Panthers to death and was deeply saddened I couldn't be antagonistic with Pitt vs. Memphis since I live in Memphis now, but it's hard not to get caught up in a final four team despite your loyalty to your school. So now it's Tiger Blue all the way!
Running Jayhawk - I stumbled across your site from Jason Leah Run (Leah helped me get a taste of what to expect from Chicago Marathon 2007 - but who coulda thunk that one!) Anyway, love your dedication to the Jayhawks and looking forward to a great game tonight. GO TIGERS!
Kansas looked great on Saturday night - much to my dismay since I had UNC on more than 1 bracket! While I hold you very high in my "running blogger friends" list, I think it would cause marital discord if I should ever root for Kansas. ;-) That, plus I win $60 in my other bracket if Memphis wins! Looking forward to a good game tonight though! And, what, no shout out to UTEP in 1990? or was that 1991?
Oh Dave...dear, sweet Dave...it's all a matter of perspective.
Like I said...it's a bit different for those Jayhawks who were there and personally witnessed his commitment to Kansas...and then watched him leave less than 36 months later. The difference Bill Self didn't tell his Illini that he'd die wearing orange and blue. Bill developed an incredible team that made a valiant run for the title after he left. I think the class he showed as a coach is why Illini fans are "over it" already (or close to that point). I'm not saying that Roy is classless, but the terms under which he left are what has made it challenging for us to "get over it" even to this day.
I didn't classify this sentiment as universal for Jayhawk Nation. But for those of us who were there...it really stung.
It's okay that you don't understand the rivalry on this deep level I'm referring to. I wouldn't expect you to. I don't even expect Jayhawks from the early 90's, or those there now to 'get it' like the classes of 2000-2005 do. It's just a very different experience for the class of 2003.
This post isn't about what Roy needed to do for himself or his family when he moved to UNC. It's about loyalty running deep. Tradition. And pride in one of the greatest programs in the history of the sport.
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK GO KU!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait for tonight! I'm wearing my Kansas stuff around campus today, and I've been yelled at and scolded so many times already! I LOVE IT!!! I cannot wait for tonight! But I agree...THE game was UNC game...and I'm not sure if you remember, but WE WON!!!!!!!!! Suck it Roy!
Goodness!!! What a debate....
I am so nervous I am going to throw up!!! It's been too long since my hometeam has done this well!!!! And from what I have read they are quite evenly matched. YIKES!
I don't know jack about this coaching stuff but I personally hate UNC since I am also a Duke and Coach K fan. And I think baby blue is just unfortunate.
Oh, and GO TIGERS!!
RAWWWRRRR!!! =)
Hey Barb--wishing the Jayhawks good luck tonite!
Rock Chalk.
WOO HOO!!!! Congratulations on the amazing comeback and win!!
Holy crap, that was the most amazing game ever. But I have to admit that I was with you - I would have not cried to lose it, after Saturday night!!
So a comment a couple of weeks later...
I read this post and I have to say it is dead on. I graduated in '03 (the wife in '02) and we understand these feelings perfectly.
I have to say though, I think all is forgiven when it comes to Roy nowadays...especially after his wearing of the Jayhawk sticker.
Rock Chalk!
