Another Season. Another Reason.
Well campers, today we officially jump started our training for the 2008 Chicago Marathon with the TNT season kick-off party. As always, it was wonderful and Mike and I left feeling motivated and excited for the upcoming season. We're mentors again this year and we're working with a few Indy Mini participants as well as a group of Chicago Marathon mentees.
You may not have known, but 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of Team In Training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In 20 short years more than $800 million has been raised to help fight blood cancers and we're closer than ever to a cure. I'm excited to know that the team is close to hitting the one billion dollar mark.
But words cannot even begin to explain the positive impact this program has had on my life. I sincerely hope it is something everyone can experience at least once. Sitting during today's kick-off amid a sea of purple shirts left me feeling proud to be part of the TNT family and excited for everyone new to the program. Hopefully you'll keep TNT in mind in the future if you're considering a marathon, triathlon or century ride in your future. It's an amazing program with such an incredible vibe. A person who starts the race with TNT, isn't the same person at the finish line.
As part of our training for the Chicago Marathon (as if we didn't have enough other things on the race calendar to train for this year!!), we are embarking on a Crusade for a Cure. A quest to raise $2620 for the society...and carry a hero list of 262 names over 26.2 miles (yes, fellow TNTer TriBoomer was the inspiration for this idea...he's brilliant I tell you! Odds are you already knew that.). But more on that later.
Here's a quick look at this past week's training...
Sunday - 9.2 mile run
Monday - Yoga for Athletes dvd
Tuesday - 1100 yard swim
Wednesday - 1 hour bike technique and endurance class
Thursday - Rest
Friday - 1250 yard swim
Saturday - 2 hour long ride (38.08 miles, 19 mph)
I only missed my mid-week fartlek run and a second yoga day (which was optional to begin with ). But ya know, I don't feel all that bad about it consider there's 10 inches of white crap piled up on the ground. Hopefully mother nature cuts us a break soon. Oh Spring! How do I crave thee!!

Wow! 20 years. I'm glad that I was a part of those 20 years. My first marathon I ran with TNT. I said I would never do it again, but I have. If my personal life wasn't so close to so many other causes I would have defintely joined the fight for my other races. If I ever run long again I might do for TNT because Tom's best friend just got diagnosed this month, but I doubt I'm ever going 26.2 again. Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration - you are changing lives and the world.
Barb, it is SUPER AWESOME to work and train with you guys to finish Chicago Marathon this year. It is going to ROCK! I wish I did not have to miss the Kick-off party last night.
GO TEAM!!
It sounds like you are going to have a good time training! Best of luck!
I can't wait to read more about your training adventures :)
Sounds like a great way to kick off the season!
Your training week looks good. Keep up the good work!
Very cool! That is a full training week - good job!
you said "fartlek." that makes me giggle.
Wow, nice training week!! Keep it up!!
Thanks for Team in Training!
Dad died of leukemia about 30 years ago and my husband was diagnosed with myeloma almost 5 years ago.
Appreciating reading about your training and your interest.
Hey stranger... excellent to hear your kicking off the TnT and the Chicago Marathon training season. Nice week of tri training.
You had a very well-rounded week w/ your fitness- great job! It will certainly help with your training for Chicago I'm sure!
I have a YOGA FOR ATHLETES DVD too and I love it!
I am inspired!
Thank you both for all you are doing with Team in Training. Not only are you raising money to find a cure for blood cancers but you are also giving back to the organization by mentoring.
Best of luck in reaching your fundraising and names on your hero list goals.
Good on ya, mates!
Stay tuned...
Terrific idea re: the 262 heroes over 26.2 miles. So terrific I'm stealing it :)
