Breathing. It's only slightly essential. Right?!
So this lil' 1.2 mile distance we have to cover by swimming...I seem to be having a teeeeeeeeeeensie teeeeeninie little problemo with.
I...cannot for the life of me...remember to come up for air...when I am focusing on the bajillion other things I need to be doing like driving my hip, putting my arms in the proverbial sleeve, the whole catch and anchor thingie, keeping my head down, driving with my elbow, kicking less, and everything else that I need to remember to be a stealth shark in the water. ('Cause lets face it. I am a shark...er...well...at least I like to think I was in a former life.)
But it just ain't happenin' campers. Even when I'm only focusing on one thing. I still forget to breathe. It's like I'm so wrapped up in maintaining the perfect body placement that breathing is placed on the back burner, when bi-lateral breathing should, in fact, be involuntary.
And then of course, when I forget...I'm all uber panicky out of nowhere, and just start kicking harder. Which leads to kicking for the sake of kicking. Which leads to valuable energy being zapped.
Brilliant. Right? I mean...who needs energy in a triathlon?
Holy heck. I'm-a-gunna-be-screwed.
This freestyle thang? it's overrated. give me some floatings and I'll doggy paddle my way to T1.
At least I made up for my super stellar 1350 yard performance in the pool with a rockstar 55 minutes of fast spin drills on the bike. It was beautiful. Lance Armstrong would've been proud. All that and I managed to survive my first official two-a-day.
Go me!

If you can get the breathing down, you'll be A-OK. Maybe you dont NEED to breathe. Maybe you are just that stellar. Good luck with the training.I envy you trying a half IM. That's awesome.
Hey congrats on your first two-a-day, get used to them. I used to feel like I was drowning all the time as well. It gets better.
I know some of that post is you being funny, but to be serious break it down. When you are swimming your main set just swim and breathe. Then use warm-ups or cool down to work drills with each drill working on the aspect of the stroke you feel needs work. I found once I managed to understnad rotation and turning at my hips breathing became easier and more natural.
Keep up the good work.
Good job on the workout; way to attack that pool!
Breathing is important, and I recommend doing so at least a couple of times per day.
I have the same problem. I barely can swim and tend to hold my breath too much. Speaking off, check out my polar bear plunge on my blog. Good job Barb!!! GO YOU!!!
Thanks. After I commented about the domain, I read how to register on blogger. I should have read before I lept. Oh well.
I think The Biggest Loser is great. It has really brought to the forefront the obesity problem in this country. The biggest shocker for them was when they went into the hall of truth. I think I almost cried with Curtis and Mallory. To think of the foods that we consume and what we do to ourselves without even thinking. We are a country of convenience and it has made us fatter.
You crack me up...don't worry, you'll get into the groove, just keep it up!

Nice job!
I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Practice in the pool makes such a difference. It came pretty quickly to us when we were swimming 5 sessions a week! I got a sort of rhythm of notes in my head like"1,2 arm wrist breath" of things I needed work on.
