Revenge of the Toe.

It's funny how one weekend I can run 26.2 miles and the following weekend a 5k seems like a monumental distance.

We had a 5k this morning. And it didn't come with ease. My hip was in a lot of pain from a Saturday afternoon of debauchary and I've got something going with my toe.

For the past few weeks, I've noticed one of my right toenails get increasingly thicker. Ew, I know. After the marathon is when it really started bothering me. So I did some research this past week and found that I should file it down and all that jazz (I also found that sometimes your toenail can get as thick as 3/4"--thankfully mine was no where near that gross). So Friday night I filed it down and got it looking normal again. But it was still sore. Part of me is a little nervous that I still might lose it...super nasty.

No bueno.

So it came as no surprise to me this morning that my toe was acting up during the run in a fantabulous throbbing fashion. My toe was finally trying to take its revenge from all the beating the past few months. But, to hell with it...I kept running.

My legs still felt like lead from last weekend, but it felt so good to be out and running again. I've had the itch since Thursday to get out and pound the pavement again.

It wasn't a PR day by any means, but I'm pleased that I finished in 33:18. I just wanted to keep my miles under 11:30, and I did that...an average pace of 10:44, finishing 67/132 in my division (right at the 50% line) and 503 out of 937 overall.

Right on. Go me.

In other fun news...Mike and I are in the process of finalizing our spring marathon plans. And we think a certain running couple from the south might be especially pleased. Although nothing is set in stone yet, but we anticipate having everything registered by Turkey Day...

I've also started reading Pfitz's Advanced Marathoning...and I am EXTREMELY intimidated by the program, but still slightly excited by all the crazy double digit runs. Neither of us think we have it in us to follow the program religiously, so we're looking at making a few minor modifcations to the schedule (doing 20 weeks rather than 18 or 24, as well as losing one of the three 20-milers and lighter mid-week long runs--speed training is definitely a must this go around and we know it). I'll keep you posted on all that stuff though!!

Okay...it's back to watching scary movies with my hottie of a hubby. I hope you all had a great weekend and remembered to change your clocks back for an extra hour of sleep!

Keep on running, campers!

Great job on the 5K, Barb. I'm sure it wasn't easy with Mr. Toe rearin' his ugly head. Take things slow and easy, and you'll get things under conrol.

Shucks! I wish you guys were running the Flying Pig with me next May. I'd love to see you again.

Oh well, until Chicago again next year, then. ;)

Nice going with the 5k even with your toe issues. EVERYONE is intimated by the Pfitz plan when they first look at it so you aren't alone.

That's awesome that you were out running another race already! And you did great!

I started reading Pfitz's book this past week too. I've had it on my bookshelf for months b/c of the intimidation factor, but I'm totally ready for it now. You'll have to keep me posted on your training! I think I'm going to go with the 24/55 plan, but I need to still decide which marathon will be my next one.

Congrats on the great race this weekend, way to get back out there running!

uggh hope that toe nail relents. I am waiting for mine to fall off but it seems determined to hang around and gross me out.

Yeah, I'm in the process of losing my left big toe toenail. It went balck and blue last March, and has been slowly but surely working its way off for the past months. I think it might take a full year.

We must be running the same circuit. I did the Trick or Treat trot, Chicago and the Bucktown 5K. The first race after a marathon is always a challenge and that 5K was no exception. Congrats on finishing!

I was looking to do a spring marathon too. (maybe Tampa Bay in Feb). Keep us posted as to your plans.

Great job on the run. I was scared shitless by the Pfitz plan when I first read it. But I have to admit it was not that bad.

My humble advice is to build up your mileage and long runs so you are where you need to be when it starts. And just do the best you can. I cut it back a bit and it still paid huge dividends for me.

Honestly though I think the long runs and the LT runs give the most benefit. Run the 3rd 20 miler it is by far the best one.

Good luch Barb! I am thinking you are getting ready to take it to the next level!

Thanks for coming by my blog. I've seen you around quite a bit, and I recognize your new pic from Trisaratop's blog. She had some cool pics of you at Chicago! Wow! Doing a 5K this soon after a marathon?!?! You are a gluten for punishment!! LOL. But great race though :-)

I got mine extracted and burned off. Toenails are seriously overrated if you ask me.

But alas, nobody did. I think I'll run off now.

Good luck with your advanced marathon training! I think it will be QUITE a while before I see a training log that will resemble that!

Awesome job running the 5K so fast after your marathon! Thanks for stopping by my blog, I sure appreciate the encouragement. I went back and read about your PF Changs marathon and what you wrote was so inspirational. I was seriously in tears at the part where your mom showed up at the end. Thanks for sharing it!! I hope your toes feels better!

HI Barb, me again. I am wondering if I can ask you some TNT questions. I want to run a half marathon in 2007 and in picking one I want to know how long to expect to train. Is there an email address I can email you at?

Thanks,

Lisa

YEAH!! I can't wait to hear about your spring plans! And I could certainly trade a CMM for a Chicago, esp if we could crash with you guys or if anyone you know would put us up!!

Don't worry about the 5K, I did a 5K two weeks after a marathon and was like a massive slug!! Crazy!!

Happy Halloween!
