Stairs = Spawn of the Devil
Oof. I am wiped out. And I worked out for less than 5 minutes. Way to go, Barb. Way to go...
I know, I know...you're sitting there thinking, are you kidding me?!
So here's how tonight went...
I left Adele & Dave's Superbowl Party with a nice little jog back to my car....easily a third of a mile. I felt great and loved the crisp Chicago air. I wanted to run right past my car and keep going, but I needed to get back home and see how Mike was feeling (had a terrible sinus headache).
So I get home and I think to myself...i've got the energy right now to do it...let's see how I do with the 26 flights of stairs in my building. BRILLIANT! I need t start doing SOMETHING to get myself ready for the Hustle Up the Hancock race on the 26th. 52 flights of stairs just don't HAPPEN. You have to earn and work toward it.
So I toss on my running clothes and lace up my shoes, grab my iPod and go down to the first floor. I set the timer on my Garmin and up I go! First few flights are GREAT! Flight seven my thighs are burning and by the 9th floor my knees are driving me nuts.
I stop on 10. Run into the condo, chug some water and notice that it's only taken me 1:55 to get there. Not too shabby! Right? So I crawl back into the narrow stairwell...
I sorta do a little stair-hop-pseudo-running thing for three flights. Feels great...and then kills. Nope, that's not gunna work. Back to the climb method. Floor 20 is here before I know it...and then I'm counting down the flights.
It took a hole 4:53 to get to the top of my 26-floor building (minus my water break on 10). I'm not sure if that's good or not considering I don't have much to compare to. We'll see how I do on my next try later this week.
But I've decided...Homie don't like stairs. I'm wondering what I've gotten myself into. Funniest part is...I'm team captain for my group of friends for the Hustle.

Are you actually racing the Hancock, or just doing a non-competitive climb? We are doing the non-competitive Oakbrook Terrace climb. The key is to go slowly. Going slowly, my legs don't hurt at all, even after 35 floors.
It'll end up being non-competitive. But I'm beyond competitive by nature...so I have a hard time going slow. How many floors is the Oakbrook Terrace Climb?
It is 31 floors (I think?); 680 steps in all. The flights in my building are much shorter than the Terrace, though, so even in doing 35 floors in my building, we have only made 400 some steps.
Told ya it would be faster than you thought. At that pace you're good to make it in 12 min total at least. Are you sore today?

stairs suck! I walk up 6 flights every day and it is killer, for real!
I think the stairs challenges sound like so much fun! I may start going up and down our stairs (one floor) in our house just for a good butt workout.
Brent was reading over my shoulder last night when I made it to the 'cowbell' reference in your last post about the w teeth and he downloaded that skit for me. OMG, hilarious! WF is so funny. Old School is the best movie ever!
